Local psychotherapist, Josephine Cropper, is celebrating this week after becoming only the fifth psychotherapist in the UK to be awarded a TRE® qualification; the ground-breaking treatment for stress, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Mrs Cropper’s achievement is even greater given she is the only psychotherapist in the North West to provide such a service. The counsellor, based in Horwich, has been treating clients for more than 15 years as JMC Psychotherapy and her TRE® qualification is the latest in a line of accolades which include being named as one of 2014’s ‘Inspirational Women in Bolton’ by the Women in Neighbourhoods group and receiving a nomination for an Enterprise Vision Award in 2013. She is also a member of the UK Council of Psychotherapy and published author of the book From Trauma to Freedom.

TRE® is an innovative series of exercises that assist the body in releasing deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma through the activation of the body’s natural reflex mechanism, calming the nervous system and helping body and mind to finally relax.

Recent statistics show that 70% of women have experienced mental health problems, whilst 78% of suicides in the UK were male. Exercise is often recognised as a good way to help ward off depression, with TRE providing a unique and natural release.

As well as helping people who suffer from mental health issues however, keen pianist Josephine is hoping to put her training to use in a unique way;

“It is vitally important that musicians, and in particular pianists, are physically relaxed in order to reach their potential”, she says.

“Yet many people, most of whom are unaware, are holding onto unreleased anxiety and stress. TRE is a method designed to release these underlying conditions and I believe my training can help pianists and musicians in general, take their talent to the next level.”
